Improve Your Building’s Efficiency and Air Quality with Duct Cleaning

Air duct systems are very important since this is the way the building is able to run hot or cool air to different rooms. They connect to the furnace or air handling unit which is full of filters that draws in air that gets cleaned then either heated or cooled before being blown throughout the building. These air ducts can be lined or insulated from the inside to be able to keep the air at the correct temperature as it makes its way through the run. There is also flex duct that is insulated and can be maneuvered in a certain way to help get the air places the main run is able to reach.

Commercial Air Duct Cleaning Process

Air duct cleaning is the process of cleaning the inside of the air ducts. Over time, as buildings become dusty and dirty, the return duct which helps pull the dust and dirt out of the room, gets sent back up to the air handling unit to then get sent into the filters for cleaning and the process starts over again. Sometimes the dust and dirt doesn’t make it back up the unit and falls short in the duct. NADCA or National Air Duct Cleaners Association states that a proper air duct cleaning should accomplish “Total Source Removal” stating that any dirt and debris should be totally removed and cleaned out.

To accomplish the cleaning of the duct there are any different pieces of equipment that are used. The use of a negative air machine, which is like a giant vacuum, will help suck air out of the ducts. The air compressor builds up air pressure in the air hose and the use of HVAC whips, which are flexible rods, help get further down the duct line to ensure any and all dust and dirt blown towards the negative air machine. The negative air machine then sucks up anything that is blown near it. Inside the negative air machine there are two sets of filters, a pre filter and a final HEPA filter. The HEPA filter, which stands for High Efficiency Particulate Arresting (Air) can capture 99.97% of all dirt and dust greater than .3 microns(micrometer, a millionth of a meter), for reference human hair can be as small as 50 microns across.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists common household dust as a top 5 allergy and asthma trigger. It is also possible for mold to grow inside ducts. This can cause underlying health issues and allergy attacks. In turn with cleaner air conditions it can improve employee health and productivity.

HVAC Duct Cleaning for Energy Efficiency

A dirty and clogged air duct system needs to work harder and longer to move the air from the unit to its final destination. The air will have to be pushed through clumps of dirt blocking it making the fan and unit work harder. This in turn can tire the unit out and cause it to deteriorate quicker causing more service and fixing. The US Department of Energy says 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling is wasted due to dirty systems. When the system is clear of debris, dust, and other blockage, air flows easier and with less energy leading to lower energy bills.
